Talk with us, not only about us

On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17 October), Caritas Europa calls on society:
“Talk with us, not about us.”

The story of Alex from Germany shows how important it is for people who have experienced poverty to be heard and included in the decisions that affect their lives.

Poverty is not merely a lack of income.
It means being excluded, silenced, and feeling invisible.
On 17 October, we mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty – a day to focus on the human stories behind the statistics.

This year Caritas Europa shares the story of Alex – a woman from Germany whose life changed when she received support from Caritas.
After years of hardship, unstable employment, and caring for her ill mother, Alex found a path toward recovery, participation, and dignity.
Today, she is actively involved in initiatives that give a voice to people who have experienced poverty and takes part in discussions with policymakers to promote fairer social policies.

Her message is loud and clear:

„The most important thing is – talk with us, not about us.“

Alex’s story reminds us that poverty is not only material but also a social wound — one that can be healed when society listens, understands, and acts with a human face.
